FRAMING DEVICES

Definition -  a technique used to bring focus to a subject.

If will be focusing on Saul Leiter and his focus on street life and using foreground and background to achieve abstract framing in the images giving my photographs specific context and meaning. I will also focus on my aperture to create depth and layers to my image. Always considering the composition lines in my image and the positioning of the framing in order to create abstract imagery. I am going to focus my work on split framing and framing within frames. Im also going to look into experimenting with the colours in my images.

Can be used to create a story and set a particular mood, by bringing focus to or from a subject in  a photograph. There are various framing devices for example a frame within a frame, a split image, structural framing, framing through light. These devices can produce abstract images and even make the photo more aesthetically pleasing.

Saul Leiter

This photography is interesting as it uses a shape in the foreground which splits the image in half producing two separate images. Its interesting as the girl on the left seems cut off from the rest of her environment due to the split and her expression connotes how she feels withdrawn and lonely. The framing on the right hand side is also interesting as there is lots of individual framing in the windows which creates a sense of depth. This technique creates abstract imagery using a simplistc effect

This photograph consists of a frame within a frame which creates a focus on the woman. The shape of the inner frame makes me think of a mirror which links to the model in the image being fully made up. I think this framing shows the individuals need for attention, vanity, and self-focus, through her makeup and seductive pout. This technique creates aesthetic.

Eugene Atget

The framing in this image creates different compositions and shows a lot of depth. the connotations of this image to me represent something holy as it creates the illusion of a passage that leads somewhere, and the light shining through relates to the connotations of being 'lead by the light'. This technique creates a story through the leading lines.

The framing in this image shows three separate things in three different compositions of the image. In the far left corner there is a bird and in the middle composition there is a child and a man, and in the lower right composition there is a woman. This can be inferred that the man has control as he is the centre of the image and relate to the perception of women in this era as they had little say in things and were 'pushed to the side'. This technique creates a political message through simplistic framing.

John Szarkowski

This photo is thought provoking as the framing in the image seems to be between the strippers legs. Within that framing there is a man who seems to be a photographer but who looks more interested in something else. This is interesting because it shows how sexualised woman are in the image and that all morals have been dismissed by the photographer as he is not concentrated on his job. the womans torso has been cut off which can makes what is not in the photo the main focus, which I think is an abstract effect.

The layout of the framing in this image creates an illusion as at first it feels like the children are isolated from the outside, yet the reflection in the glass window, creates a background behind the children that looks like they are outside. This technique of reflection is interested as it almost merges two images together to create a story, which I think is very abstract.
